 boredom overcomes [open]
« Thread Started on Jul 17, 2008, 8:52pm »

One word came to Rave’s mind as he walked along the city of Camelot; responsibility. As a Knight for King Alexander Deveraux, his responsibility had increased in the last eleven years he spent growing, training and learning the ways of a Knight in Camelot. He also gained experience in several fields, and gained respect. Rave ran a hand through his blond hair and blinked his blue eyes. Out of the entire time he spent in Camelot, Schatten never expected to be so highly respected and be actually be looked upon by older knights and pages. Schatten knew he had to have a Squire, he’d have many, but Rave wasn’t exactly sure if he really wanted to have the responsibility yet. See, there it was again. That word; the word that was so important to every Knight, or any other high figure.

His eyes drifted off the path ahead of him, and gazed to the merchants, and the citizens doing their usual shopping. Rave heaved a large sigh as he moved his gaze to the ground and slowed his pace. If an onlooker was to examine Rave, they would probably find out two, maybe three things. One, was that he was a knight; his posture and the way he held himself proved that. Two, he was bored and had nothing to do. As a possible three, they could possibly see that he was troubled slightly. One could hear Schatten sigh again as he turned the corner to head back to the Knight’s Yard. He was going back to attempt to find something else to do.

Heading back to the stables more specifically, Rave made his decision on what he was going to do. Several minutes later, Schatten entered the stables and grabbed his horse Jaegerkirsch’s tack and grooming kit. Giving the gelding a quick pat as Rave entered Jaegerkirsch’s stall, he began to thoroughly brush through the gelding’s coat. Soon, Jaegerkirsch was shining, and tacked up. Schatten sighed again and led the gelding out into the open. As Rave pulled himself onto Jaegerkirsch’s back, Schatten bowed his head and had Jaegerkirsch move into a slow trot. Posting, Schatten kept his head bowed, there was one conclusion one could gather from this; Rave was headed to do an unauthorized patrol of Camelot.

The loud ‘clop’ that Jaegerkirsch’s shod feet made on the ground, drew attention to the gelding and Knight. With the saddle, and bridle on the horse, the citizens and onlookers could find out what family Rave came from. The Verloren crest was broadly emblazoned on both saddle and bridle. If one was to look closely enough, the Verloren crest was also emblazoned on Schatten’s right shoulder. After going around the city once, Schatten was still bored out of his mind, so he resumed another round of unauthorized ‘patrolling’.

The echoing of cantering hoofbeats could be heard ringing up the streets, slowly getting louder. The people moved aside quickly, partially because they didn't want to get run over and partially because it was Princess Caitlyn Deveraux. Of course, her yelling at them to move helped the matter. Her eyes picking out a knight--Schatten--she drew the buckskin mare to a halt. Mare and girl both breathing somewhat heavily, her hand, with a pointed finger, strayed back the way she'd come.

Someone... Fell in... The river... And I... Can't... Swim...

She told him through gasping breaths. Hearing what had happened, the people crowded around them quickly began whispering, worried for the person, but interested as well. As if this hadn't happened before. Aien, still hyped up from the run had begun spinning back and forth, prancing on the spot and so on.

Schatten heard the cantering hoof beats of an approaching horse, he never bothered to stop until he heard a familiar voice; the voice that belonged to Princess Caitlyn Deveraux. He pulled Jaegerkirsch to a halt and turned the gelding around to make eye contact with the princess. Rave watched her point a finger back the way she came, and take labored breaths to tell him something.

‘Someone…fell in…the river…and I…can’t…swim.’ Schatten mentally rolled his eyes at this; how could the princess not be able to swim? The mere idea of it made Schatten wonder how well they even taught the heirs anything. Sighing softly, the knight nodded. “Very well, Princess, please, take me there as fast as your mare may carry you.” Schatten said with a hint of Verloren pride about him. That was what made him take the duty of saving the person who might be drowning. Schatten kicked Jaegerkirsch into a slight trot up to stand near the princess before raising an eyebrow as he watched the mare prance in place.

[It's okay, this one sucked too. It's early morning, so, yeah, I can't think.]

Had it been any other time, Cait would have probably noticed some glicker of change in him that pointed towards him thinking her incompetent in some way. And, of course, she would certainly have argued that point. But now was not the time, nor the place. Turning Aien, she pushed her mare into a gallop, the townspeople once again moving out of the way. Aien wasn't as fast as Beltane, her father's horse, but she had enough speed.

It didn't take too long to reach the river, but Cait pulled up metres away. There was absolutely no chance she would go any closer, that much was apparent by the fear that had come into her eyes. Given the circumstances, it would be understandable to mistake it for fear or the person's life. However, it was far from that. She had fallen in the river once, and nearly drowned. Her mother had tried to teach her to swim after that, but she hadn't been able to get her anywhere near water unless it was for a bath or in a glass.

Spurring Jaegerkirsch into a slower gallop than what the gelding usually would run, Schatten watched the princess head towards the river. It only took the princess and knight a few minutes to reach the river on account of their fleet-footed mounts, and Schatten kept his feet out of the stirrups until the river was in sight. Slowing Jeagerkirsch a little ways, Schatten turned his right foot and briefly rested it on the saddle before jumping off and running towards the river. Considering the situation, Rave had no idea how long the person had been a) in the water, and b) if they could swim.

Rave didn’t stop running until he was knee deep in the water. Looking around, the knight tried to find something useful. As he waded deeper, he began looking for a body, clothing, a shoe, anything that would tell where the person was. The water had gotten him soaked all the way to his waist, and he now just realized something; it was cold. Taking a breath, Schatten bent over and tried to feel around underneath the water on the river’s bottom. He couldn’t feel nor see anything. Standing up, Rave faced the princess. “Princess! Do you know where this person is? I cannot see them!” He shouted. The princess was meters away from the river, and if he was going to attempt to save this person’s life, he needed her help.

She seemed to shrink away as soon as he hinted he needed her help. She closed her eyes and gulped, about to head to the river when she remembered a spell. A finding spell. Her eyes shot open, determined look in her eyes.

Watch for a flash of light. They'll be there.

Glad it was a spell she had practiced thoroughly, she closed her eyes and imagined the person as she had seen them. Short, brown hair. A boyish face. He would be around the knight's age. Emerald green eyes. Then the picture came to mind and she thought the few words that would find him. A few meters from the knight, a red glow began and then light shot out from the point, fading within seconds. Deepening her concentration, she kept the flashes going, brow furrowed.

At that exact point, the young man burst up, gulping for air and spluttering out water while tried to keep afloat. Go figure he would be in a deeper part of them river. But, still the light flashes kept going. Cait hadn't noticed.

Listening to the princess, Schatten nodded. He looked around for the flash of light; he almost missed it. Seconds later the man came up gasping for breath. Wading over, Rave was up to his chest in the water as he reached the man. Schatten grabbed the man as he pulled both his own and the extra weight back to the riverbank. At least the man was alive. Panting from the dragging of the weight, Schatten heaved the man up and rested him on the riverbank. The man kept spluttering and kept getting Rave wetter than he already was.

“Take it easy! You’re safe now. What’s your name?” Schatten asked. The man’s brown hair was hanging in his eyes and he kept coughing. Rave couldn’t tell if the man had suffered from Hypothermia or something else in the cold water of the river. Standing up, leaving the man to his stuttering, Rave squeezed out some of the water that was in his clothes. He was dressed in clothes that made him look slightly like a regular citizen; except for the expensive cloth and his family crest on his shoulder and the tack of his gelding. Sighing, Schatten sat down on the ground next to the man, slightly tired. “Ya know, I’ll tell you one thing; you’re sure glad I cam princess, all those other knights are thingyy, arrogant bastards! They’d do anything to get a shot at you."

Certain she wouldn't have to get in the water now, she slid off of Aien. The mare knew she was 'ground tied', and so simply stood there with perfect patience, a rare trait in a five year old. Walking over, she knelt down next to the man, glancing nervously over at the river, then back at him. Whistling softly for Aien to come over, she stood up again and reached into the saddle bag. She took out a small potion bottle, no taller than her thumb and no wider, either. She knelt back down and uncorked it for him, handing it to him.

Take this. It will help with the chill.

Satisfied the man would be alright until he could get to a healer, she turned the the knight, almost laughing softly at what he said.

They can certainly try. But I highly doubt they could put up with me for long. Especially since I have a better aim with an arrow than almost all of them.

She turned back to the man, taking the now empty potion bottle.

Now. Go get some dry clothes, wrap up in some blankets, and see a healer. We don't want you getting sick. If the village healers can't help you, come see me at the palace and we'll get you one of our healers. Father will understand.

THe man nodded, stuttering out a thanks, since he was still cold. Before he went away, she took off the sheet draped over Aien's back, under the saddle, that told of her rank, and draped it around his shoulders.

And you may as well keep that. I've got plenty more.

Schatten was quiet until the princess spoke to him. “I don’t mean to brag princess, but I’m a pretty good shot myself.” He then realized that the man hadn’t answered his question, but Rave didn’t mind. Sighing, Rave stood up and brushed off his pants. Whistling sharply, Schatten waited a little while before Jaegerkirsch came trotting up. Smiling, Rave remounted his gelding. “Princess, if you don’t have anything else to do outside the castle, you should return. After all, you are a princess. Pardon me if I don’t hold my place on the matter, but it’s my opinion. I know I have no right to question you.” Schatten said looking down at the base of Jaegerkirsch’s neck.

Rave knew he was speaking out of his rank and he should hold his tongue when he talked to the princess. Although Schatten was a knight, he was of no means worthy enough to converse on an equal level of conversation with her, or any member of the royal family for that matter. Sighing, Rave remembered that the King was only seven years older than he was. He wondered why some people were born to rule, why couldn’t they live a life that was ruled by the people? Schatten knew he shouldn’t be thinking along those lines; it wasn’t his place to, nor was it anything he could not put his vote towards. He could be called a traitor, and that was one thing Schatten was not. Rave would never be a traitor to his king, or to Talent. He’d serve them until he died.

She sighed, moving to remount her own mare, but then she looked up to the sky. So tempting. Her dad told her to never show her wings in public. But she was alone, mainly. And she didn't really care about what he said. At least, in this case. After all, there was no logical reason to hide it. Little did she know it would originally have been demon blood flowing through her veins, not the blood of the angels. Casting a simple beginner's spell, she sent Aien trotting home, and a small smile form on her face.

Ah, but its no fun there. No open skies.

Then, her face broke out in a grin and she bolted towards the river, leaping but not worrying about the water this time. Her white wings shot out, ripping the back of her outfit. She didn't care. She could fix it, easy. She let herself rise on a thermal, closing her eyes happily. It was one of those rare days where she just wanted to have fun, instead of learn something new or correct her dad yet again. She hovered and turned to face Schatten, eyes opening.

No need to worry about me. I can take care of myself. Though, of course, you're welcome to follow. If you can keep up.

With that said, she turned and began flying away, not nearly as fast as she could go. For now, she was just enjoying herself. Being a normal teenager, instead of some genius like she usually was.
